Breakup Survival

How to get over him and move on with your self-esteem intact.
When you're stuck in a relationship that's clearly not working out, and you know -- deep inside -- that a breakup is inevitable, who ends it? Breaking up is never easy -- no matter you've been together for weeks, months or years, but "if you cannot let go of a relationship that is not working, you will never be able to reach for a relationship that is better," says relationship therapist Dr. Bethany Marshall, author of Deal Breakers. Here, how to get over him and move on with your self-esteem intact.

1. Confront your fears

"Relationships are hard to give up because they give you an identity and a sense of self-esteem," explains Marshall. Relationships make you feel desirable and give you the assurance that you are loved, which is why leaving a relationship can feel so frightening and difficult – the prospect of becoming alone again can be feel terrifying for many women.

"But even though you may feel sad, you do have the capacity to recover", she assures. Remember, the end of a relationship isn't the end of the world, and by leaving a relationship that is clearly not working out, you will pave the way for a life that is more fulfilling and rewarding.

2. Clear out everything that reminds you of him

Love letters, photographs, gifts, clothing, music, can all be reminders of what used to be. They can keep you reliving the past, and that's not where your future lies. Putting these love mementoes out of your line of vision means you can't trip into memory lane.
